city. Hamburg is renowned for its wonderful Christmas markets,
which are staged in many of the city centre's squares. Located
opposite the impressive town hall, the prettiest of these was
established by Roncalli's Circus. It has stalls laden with
confectionery, toys and crafts, and the punch is even served by
circus artistes! Nostalgic carousels bring a gleam to everyone's eyes,
not just the children's. A visit to Hamburg in the weeks before
Christmas is something you'll never forget.

Every year Düsseldorf's Christmas market opens its "gingerbread
skating is free and there are instructors and childcare facilities.

Atmospheric Christmas markets with individual themes are staged
at different places in the lively city centre:
Sternchenmarkt at Stadtbrückchen
Marktplatz in front of the historic town hall
The Engelchenmarkt is on  Heinrich-Heine-Platz in the Old Town.
Schadowplatz is particularly family-friendly with a merry-go-round
and special activities for children.

Christmas Market opening times:
18 November to 23 December 2010, daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
(Sundays to Thursdays) and to 9 p.m. (Fridays and Saturdays). On
Commemoration Day, 21 November, the market will be closed.
Düsseldorf's Christmas Market
Nuremberg
Every year, Germany's most famous Christmas Market opens its stalls
for visitors from all over the world, right in the middle of the city, on
the Nuremberg Main Market Square. The Christmas Angel opens
Nuremberg's ever-popular Christkindlesmarkt on Hauptmarkt square
medieval atmosphere and delicious aromas of gingerbread,
bratwurst, roasted almonds and glühwein. Everyone's eyes light up
at the sight of so many Christmas decorations and gifts. The
children's market has a traditional carousel, Ferris wheel and steam
train. Between the two markets is the Nativity trail, taking visitors on
a tour of the city's many Nativity scenes.

Dresden
Dresden's Christmas Market is traditionally called Striezelmarkt, it is
Germany's oldest Christmas Market with a very long history dating
back to 1434. Dresdenhas the tallest Christmas pyramid in the
world. Established in 1434 its name comes from Hefestriezel,
renowned as the original Dresden Christstollen. Every year on the
3rd Saturday before Christmas a Traditional hand-crafted goods from
Dresden and the surrounding region include pyramids, incense
burners, decorative arches, pottery and hanging stars.

Cologne
Cologne boasts six extraordinary Christmas markets.
The Market at the Cologne Cathedral is the most impressive one of
Cologne's Christmas markets due to the backdrop of the imposing
Cathedral.
The Christmas market on the Alter Markt takes place in front of
narrow-gabled houses of the Old Town Hall
T
he Market on the Neumarkt, Cologne's oldest Christmas market. is
in the shopping area against the backdrop of the Church St. Aposteln.
The Christmas Market on the Rudolfplatz is home to a fairytale-
themed version and there is a medieval market outside the Chocolate
Museum.

The Floating Christmas Market is held on one of the
"Köln-Düsseldorf" Rhine cruise ships. Get into the yuletide swing with
countless stalls, mouth-watering delights from around the world,
evocative Christmas concerts, stage shows, Nativity displays and a
festive boat trip on the Rhine.

Munich

The Munich Christmas Market offers traditional Bavarian Christmas
gifts, including wood carvings from Oberammergau, gingerbread
(Lebkuchen) from Nuremberg and notably some exquisite glassware
from the Bavarian Forest. Crib figurines, bee wax candles, chimney
sweeps made of plums and almonds are just some of many
thousands of other traditional Christmas gift ideas on display.

Christmas mangers, cribs and nativity scenes have long been a
tradition in Munich. Kripperlmarkt, one of the largest in Germany,
specialises in cribs and other nativity accessories.

There are  20 Christmas Markets located throughout the city of
Munich, including a Medieval Christmas Market with gospel singing at
the Wittelsbacher Platz, a gay pink Christmas Market
(Stephansplatz) and There is even a Christmas Market with ice
skating facilities at Munich’s international airport.

Leipzig
The focal point of Leipzig's traditional Christmas market is the
beautiful old market square in front of the Old Town Hall.
In addition to over 200 stalls, other highlights include the biggest
Advent calendar in the world (857m2), a fairytale forest with
recreations of well-known stories, City on Ice, a 500m2 ice rink on
Augustusplatz, and the Old Town Hall trumpeters.

Freiburg
Freiburg's Christmas market, on the Rathausplatz and in
Franziskanerstrasse, is located in the very heart of Freiburg's
beautiful historical quarter.

The Freiburg Christmas Market offers visitors a wide range of
traditional arts and crafts from the Black Forest, including straw
shoes and colourful wooden toys. The highlight being the candle
workshop where visitors can watch real beewax candles being made
to order.
