The Carefree Traveller
Aruba is located about 12 degrees north of the equator, approximately 29km (18 miles) off the
Paraguana Peninsula of Venezuela. An autonomous region within the Kingdom of the
Netherlands, Aruba has no administrative subdivisions.
Unlike much of the Caribbean region, Aruba has a dry climate and an arid, cactus-strewn
landscape. This climate has helped tourism as visitors to the island can reliably expect warm,
sunny weather. The island, one of the Lesser Antilles islands, is about 30 km (19 miles) long and
about 8 km (5 miles) wide with an area of 193 sq km (75 sq miles)and a population of some
89,000. It lies outside the hurricane belt.
Aruba is a generally flat, riverless island. Aruba is renowned for its white, sandy beaches on the
western and southern coasts of the island, relatively sheltered from fierce ocean currents, and
this is where most tourist development has taken place. The northern and eastern coasts, lacking
this protection, are considerably more battered by the sea and have been left largely untouched.
The hinterland of the island features some rolling hills, the best known of which are called
Hooiberg at 165 meters (541 ft) and Mount Jamanota, the highest on the island at 188 metres
(617 ft) above sea level. Oranjestad, the capital, is located at 12°19′N 70°1′W / 12.317, -70.017.
Aruba's Beaches are considered among the
best in the world. All are marked by white sands and
cyrstal clear waters.
Arashi Beach is located just south of the lighthouse
near the northwestern tip of Aruba and is known for
terrific snorkeling.
Palm Beach is famous for calm waters and is located
right in front of the major resorts.
Eagle Beach provides shaded picnic areas and plenty
of parking right off the main road. Several hotels are
nearby, just across the street from the beach.
Rodgers Beach features a slightly rough surf. It is
located close to the Baby Beach, and offers shady
areas and shower facilities.
Baby Beach, known for its tranquil swimming cove, is
located in Seroe Colorado at the southeastern end of
the island, near the oil refinery.
Druif Beach, located on the East Side of the island.
features a broad stretch of white powder sand and
calm waters. Hotel facilities nearby.
Tops optional. Accessible by public bus, car or taxi
