The Carefree Traveller
Ottawa, Canada's Capital
Less than an hour's drive from the American border, Ottawa enjoys
the attributes of a major centre for the visual and performing arts. In
addition it has access to spectacular park and wilderness areas
located within and around the city
The heart of Ottawa and the Canadian government is Parliament Hill. Built between 1859 and
1927 on a tree-covered promontory overlooking the Ottawa River, the Parliament Buildings are
magnificent neo-Gothic (Centre Block) and Gothic structures with copper covered roofs. Visitors can
tour the House of Commons, the Senate, and the Library of Parliament in the Centre Block. The
best view of the region can be obtained from the observation deck of the Peace Tower. On the
lawn facing the Centre Block is the Centennial Flame, lit in 1967 to commemorate the 100th
anniversary of Canadian Confederation.
During the summer, Parliament Hill hosts the daily Changing of the Guard
ceremony, a military tradition dating back to the 19th century. The biggest
day of the year is July 1 when tens of thousands flood Parliament Hill and
Confederation Boulevard for Canada Day celebrations.
The Rideau Canal winds its way 202
kilometres (125.5 miles) from Ottawa to Kingston.
It is a system of natural lakes and rivers made
navigable by locks, dams and canal cuts.
The Rideau Canal is one of the Capital's most
popular recreational areas. In the summer,
canoes and motorboats ply the waters, while
walkers, joggers, cyclists and in-line skaters enjoy
the recreational pathways alongside. In the
winter, 8 kilometers are cleared to become the
longest outdoor ice-skating rink in the world.

Rideau Hall
Rideau Hall is the official residence of the
Governor General of Canada, Her Excellency
Michaëlle Jean. Canada's Governor General
invites you to visit Rideau Hall, the home
and workplace of every Governor General
since Confederation in 1867, where
Canadians are honoured and welcomed
alongside world leaders and visitors from
around the globe. Rideau Hall is a 79 acre
oasis of beautifully landscaped grounds -
just minutes from downtown Ottawa.
Unless an official function is taking place,
visitors are welcome on the Rideau Hall
grounds year round.
