The locals in Munich
fondly refer to
Oktoberfest as „die
Wiesn“ because of
its location,
Theresienwiese,
which was named
after Therese von

Hildburghausen.
The Carefree Traveller
Oktoberfest is a two-week beer festival with an amusement park
held each year in Munich (München), Bavaria, Germany, during
late September and early October. It is one of the most famous
events in the city and the world's largest fair, with some 6 million
people attending . Other cities across the world also hold fairs,
modeled after the Munich event, called Oktoberfest.
The event takes place during the 16 days before the first Sunday
in October on an area named the "Theresienwiese", called "die
Wiesn" ("the meadow", in Bavarian dialect) for short.
Oktoberfest München
Saturday, September 22nd - Sunday October 7, 2007.
HISTORY OF OKTOBERFEST
The first Oktoberfest, held from October 12 to October 17, 1810 in Munich, was to celebrate the
wedding of Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen, and
ended with a horse race. Because of its success, it was repeated annually, later also with an
agricultural fair, dance, music and amusement rides. Horse races ended in 1960.
Oktoberfest Beer
A special Oktoberfest beer is brewed for the occasion which is slightly darker and stronger, in
both taste and alcohol. It is served in a one-liter-tankard called Maß. Only local Munich breweries
are allowed to serve this beer in the Bierzelte (beer "tents") which hold 3,000 to10,000 people.
Only six Munich breweries are allowed to serve beer at Oktoberfest . these are: Löwenbräu,
Spaten, Augustiner, Hofbräu, Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr. Visitors also consume large
quantities of food, most of it traditional hearty fare such as sausage, hendl (chicken) and
sauerkraut, along with such Bavarian delicacies as roast ox tails.
The locals in Munich fondly refer to their Oktoberfest as „die Wiesn“ because of its location, Theresienwiese, which was named after Therese von Sachsen- Hildburghausen.

are available under The Big Tents
If you are unable to reserve a place in
the bigger beer tents or you’d rather
experience the coziness of smaller tent,
have a look at the Small and Medium
Tents
You can visit the beer tents without a
reservation.... However, arrive as early
as possible. During the week, arrive no
later than 2:30pm. On weekends it’s
best to go in the morning. Otherwise,
you run the risk of not being able to
enter the tents at all because they’re

expect to wait in line like others –
those without seats won’t be served
any beer!
Beer and food vouchers are only available in the beer tents. Contact the tents directly.
