Oktoberfest Zinzinatti September 22-23, 2007
Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
|
Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati began in 1976 as a block party. It is now held on 5 blocks of
Fifth Street, between Race Street and Broadway, in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio at
historic Fountain Square on Saturday and Sunday (late morning to early evening) of
the 3rd weekend in September. With an annual attendance of 500,000, it is North
America's 2nd largest Octoberfest, after Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario Canada.
Entertainment includes the world's largest Chicken Dance and Kazoo Band on Sunday
afternoon. There are several stages of entertainment with German bands and
dancers, as well as strolling German bands. There are also polka and log sawing
contests, beer barrel rolling, and beer stein racing where contestants race across
Fountain Square with two fists full of filled beer steins - the winner being the one with
best time and the most beer left.
Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati features approximately 80 booths serving up authentic German
food, beer, wine, soft drinks and souvenirs. Major stages and large tents feature live
entertainment — from big bands to accordion players to German folk dancers
performing throughout the weekend. For the kids, Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati offers
amusement rides and interactive games
The festival weekend offers plenty of German food from many vendors and two bier
gartens.
The Gemuetlichkeit Games take place at noon during the week prior to Oktoberfest,
to build excitement and to get the community involved in the celebration.
A special attraction of the Games is the stein race; Mädchens fill steins, glasses or
mugs with beer and attempt to run across Fountain Square without spilling any. This
has its roots in an old Cincinnati German tradition in which contests were held to find
out how many steins of beer could be held in each hand without spilling any of the
beer.
In 1994, the Crown Prince of Bavaria attended Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati and helped the
event set a world record for the World's Largest Chicken Dance, with 48,000
participating.
