The Carefree Traveller
Viareggio, on the Tuscany coast, has one of the biggest Carnival celebrations in Italy.
The 135 years old Viareggio Carnevale is one of the most famous carnivalesque event in Italy,
and one of the most important in Europe, attracting hundreds of thousand visitors from all over
the world.
The stars of the 2011 Viareggio Carnevale will once again be the huge paper maché floats and
puppets, which will parade along the famous "viali a mare", down the sea promenades, offering
a wide programme of entertainment and fun for children and adults.
The people of Viareggio prepare the huge papier-mâché puppets in hangar-like buildings by the
sea. The figures satirise public and political figures and making them and setting them atop the
floats requires considerable technical skill, creativity and imagination.
In addition to the parade, masks' fiestas, theater shows and musical comedies take place. The
restaurants offer special carnival's menus. Among the most impressive experiences of the
carnival is the magnificent fireworks show. The carnival is a marvelous winter event that cannot
be missed.
